Celebrating 75 yrs
Most weekends, you’ll find me on the sidelines of a football pitch or in a gymnasium, camera in hand, capturing the action, emotions, and memories that unfold during an RCF07 match or twirling baton competition. It’s rare that someone approaches me while I’m working, unless it’s a parent asking about photos of their child. Two weeks ago, that changed. During a match, a gentleman came over and introduced himself. He had seen me taking photos during the match and asked if I would be interested in photographing his upcoming 75th birthday celebration. It wasn’t a football match, tournament, or club event. It was simply a birthday surrounded by family and friends.
Everyone called him “Girou,” and for the sake of this story, that’s the name I’ll use. Of course, around football people, hearing the name Girou immediately brings to mind the famous French striker. But this Girou has his own story—one built through years of friendship, loyalty, and connection to the RCF07 community. When the day finally arrived, I quickly realized this wasn’t just a birthday party.
Held at the official RCF07 grounds, the celebration brought together people who had been connected to the club for many years. Some had known each other for decades. While others, Girou just invited new people the day before his birthday. While I walked around the facility, I found myself listening to stories, laughter, and memories that stretched back long before I ever arrived as a RCF07 team mom.
One thing I have learned through football is that clubs are about much more than results on the field. Players come and go, seasons begin and end, but the friendships created along the way often last a lifetime. This gathering was proof of that.
One of the biggest surprises of the day was the meal. A private chef had been invited to prepare a traditional paella for the guests. It was my first time seeing one made in person, and I honestly had no idea what to expect. What surprised me most was the time it took. For nearly two and a half hours, the chef carefully prepared the ingredients, stirred, seasoned, and patiently built the dish step by step. Guests gathered around throughout the afternoon, eating appetizers and drinking, and watching the process unfold. There was something special about it. Nobody was rushing. Everyone was talking, sharing stories, and simply enjoying being together. As I watched the paella slowly come to life, I couldn’t help but think about how similar it was to the friendships in the room. The best things aren’t built overnight. They take time, patience, and years of shared experiences.
When the paella was finally ready, everyone gathered inside and around the tables. The conversations continued, the laughter grew louder, and the atmosphere felt more like a family reunion than a birthday celebration. As a photographer, I often focus on celebrations and decisive moments. But this day reminded me that some of the most meaningful memories happen when people come together to celebrate a life well lived, friendships that have stood the test of time, and a community that continues to grow year after year.
I am grateful that Girou trusted me to document such an important milestone. What began as a simple conversation on the sidelines after a RCF07 match became an opportunity to witness something truly special.
Happy 75th Birthday, Girou. Thank you for the stories, the laughter, and the reminder that football clubs are not only built by players and coaches, but also by the people whose passion and friendships keep them alive for generations. Thank you for allowing me to be part of such a special celebration. It was an honor to capture these memories and witness the friendships that have grown through decades of passion for soccer.
