Personal Branding Photoshoot for Odile KOENIG
One of the unexpected joys of being a photographer is discovering the stories behind the people I photograph.
Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph Odile KOENIG. Before our session, I knew she was an exceptional swimmer, but I didn’t realize I was standing in front of a French Masters long-distance fin swimming champion. Learning about her achievements after our session made me appreciate the experience even more.
Odile won the 5,000-meter Vétérans Femmes French Masters title in 2019. At the end of June, she added two more remarkable victories by winning both the 3 km Masters 50+ Femmes and 5 km Masters 50+ Femmes at the Championnats de France Élite et
Masters d’eau libre in Jumièges.
As photographers, we sometimes find ourselves in front of accomplished athletes, artists, or public figures. It can feel intimidating because you wonder if you should treat them differently. Yet, the more people I meet, the more I realize they simply want to be treated like everyone else. That was exactly how my time with Odile felt.
She reminded me of one of my older sisters—warm, thoughtful, and easy to talk to. We spoke about family, everyday life, and everything in between. If I hadn’t looked up her accomplishments afterward, I never would have guessed I had spent the afternoon photographing one of France’s top Masters Women swimmers.
What surprised me the most was how nonchalant she was about her recent victories. She had just earned two gold medals, yet she spoke about them as though it were simply another day. I remember thinking, “Wow.” There was no need to boast or seek recognition. Her humility spoke louder than any medal ever could. As we continued talking, she mentioned how much she trains—not only in the swimming pool but also at home. She trains outdoor fitness with her husband JC weekly and does personal trainings. Our conversations reminded me that what appears effortless on the surface is usually the result of countless hours of disciplined practice. Athletes like Odile make excellence look ordinary because the commitment has become part of their everyday lives.
I left our session with more than just photographs. I left with a greater appreciation for the quiet dedication that often exists behind remarkable achievements. Sometimes, the strongest competitors aren’t the ones who talk the most about winning—they’re simply focused on doing what they love, day after day.
Photography continues to remind me that every person has a story waiting to be discovered. Sometimes, the most extraordinary people are also the most humble. And sometimes, you don’t realize you’ve just photographed a champion until after you’ve made them feel comfortable and amazing during the session.
